July 2012

We started out with less than a bang, but found it in end of this month!

We have experienced a lot of fires in our state this month, and one pretty close to our home.  As a result it prompted me to run a fire drill and see what we would save and what we would take if we have 15 minutes to go.  It was pretty funny what we put in the pile, and there were a few tears shed for what we would have lost.  Overall it was a very good experience and we feel better prepared for doing it.

For the 4th of July, we had so many fires here that all types of fireworks were outlawed.  We couldn't even have sparklers or snappers, it was that bad.  We decided to celebrate our own way instead.  We went to the community picnic that both E and M volunteered at.  B loved being in the bike parade.  I loved the old time band.  After that we came back here for fun games with some friends of ours.  We finished by having my parents come over for a Barb-b-Que.  We made our own fireworks from Mentos and diet coke, as well as glow sticks.

We decided that since we hadn't been to the Renaissance Festival in a while, that we would go.  E was feeling pretty rich from all her dog/house sitting money, so she rented a dress.  She looked pretty good in it.  The highlight was watching E in a hypnotist show.  It was pretty funny seeing her snuggle up with complete strangers thinking they were a big teddy bear!

M decided to play basketball with his friends again this year.  They didn't win, but had a lot of fun playing!

E also got her first "real" job this month at rue21.  It is a clothing store with a lot of hip clothes in it.  She likes the clothes and the work, but is finding that a regular job is hard to schedule around.  I'm thinking this won't last long once she starts school.

We finished the month with a trip out to Utah.  We packed a lot into a week, but it was fun and a big learning experience.  Here is the breakdown from the trip:

College Tours:  We saw Utah State, BYU and University of Utah.  It was decided the Utah State was the winner for both E and M.  It has top notch education and biology schools, plus it is absolutely beautiful up there.  There are a lot of good dating and socializing opportunities as well.  Only problem is we will have to pay out of state tuition.  BYU came in a close second, with no one wanting to go to the grandparents Alma Mater, the U.

Fireworks and Parades:  We celebrated our first Pioneer Day celebration with a huge parade and a TON of fireworks!  Apparently nothing is illegal in Utah, so all the neighbors were putting up some pretty impressive shows.  We had sparklers and snappers to make up in spades for our 4th.  It was fun being with family on that night as well.

Later that week we celebrated the Olympics opening ceremonies with British food and a lot of family again.  The show was nicely done, however I don't think that anyone can touch Beijing in 2008.

Family and Friends:  We got to see a lot of family and even drive down to the infamous "Dry Farm".  It was much prettier than I thought it would be.  I'm glad that we have the property, but kind of wish we lived closer to it.  Oh the camping and paint balling we could do there!

We were also able to see our friends who are visiting in Utah from China, for the summer.  They have two cute little girls that we hadn't met yet, and B loved playing with them.

Temple Square:  We did manage to stop in at temple square and tour all around.  B really loved the statue of the Christos.  There is a lot more there than I remembered.  We even met a missionary from China who tried to pull B out.  It didn't work, but she tried!

We finished out our summer with a great trip and a lot of fireworks, so we feel it was a very successful July!
